The school works to a ‘creative curriculum’ and promotes the learning and application of skills across all subject areas. The schemes of work for each subject are planned within each year group. All classes within each year group cover the same work. Basic skills such as reading, handwriting, spelling and number facts are taught and practised daily. The priorities for academic achievement are the basic skills, particularly in English and Mathematics, in order that pupils transfer to Secondary school well equipped for their studies at Key Stages 3 and 4. Alongside the ‘National Curriculum’ the school also is proud of what we call the ‘Mayflower Curriculum’ which covers a variety of areas, opportunities and skills that are made available to all of our children. These range from our ‘focus days’ such as our ‘International Day of Languages’ and ‘World Book Day’, focus weeks such as ‘Art Week’ to a variety of activities and events such as the School Choir, trips and visits, our International Comenius Project and recognition of achievement through our assemblies and ‘Well Done’ blogs. Children are helped to develop a ‘Growth Mindset’ approach to their work and activities and are aware that it is ‘ok to make mistakes’ so long as they use these as a tool to develop future learning. As our children develop they take a responsibility for their own learning, making decisions as to where they start their tasks and the targets they are setting in order to achieve.
We are also proud of the way in which our children across the school respond to the homework they are given. This gives the children the opportunity to build upon the skills they have learnt in class, to reinforce concepts that have been covered and to prepare for the next area of work/learning as well as an opportunity for them to demonstrate an understanding of what they have learnt through a variety of approaches rather than just simple 'work sheets'. Homework is posted on the school's website and is available for all parents to view. Again our homework reflects the ‘cross curricular’ approach we have in school and the children are encouraged to present their homework in a way that they think is best. This has led to homework of a very good quality as well as preparing our children for organising their own work for secondary school.
