    1. PE

Subject Leaders
Anisha Jethwa

My name is Anisha Jethwa, and I teach the children in Year 2.  I have been at Mayflower for 25 years.  I enjoy yoga and tai chi and I love spending time with my family and friends and travelling.  I have only just become a new member of the PE Leads at Mayflower.  During this period, we have revised plans to ensure progression and skills in PE are built upon and all areas of PE are covered as the children move through the school.  I am eager to develop certain areas of PE further such as dance, Outdoor and Adventure Activities (OAA) and the inclusion of children with disabilities.

Fatima Bham

My name is Fatima Bham, and I teach the children in PE in KS2.  I have been at Mayflower for almost 12-years.  I love music, eating out, and visiting new places.  I have been the PE Lead at Mayflower for many years, and I also really enjoy seeing the balance between competitive and participatory sport.  At Mayflower, we try to ensure that all of our children gain access to competitions and festival sport, and we are well-supported by a range of different venues in the City of Leicester.  We are also part of Inspire Plus, and are grateful for the opportunities they create for our children locally.

Malika Bahadur

My Name is Malika Bahadur, and I have just completed my apprenticeship as a Sports Coach.  I have been based at Mayflower throughout this time, and have really enjoyed working with the children from all age groups.  I also work as a Teaching Assistant, and this has helped me to understand even more about the children.  I really enjoy seeing them take part in their lessons, and the enjoyment that can be derived from high-quality school sport.

Intent, Implementation and Impact

As PE Leaders, we will work hard to ensure that our curriculum is effectively delivered to all of the children at Mayflower Primary School.  Teachers will be well trained, equipped with quality resources to deliver engaging lessons, and have the confidence to engage with children as they develop their skills in endurance, flexibility, teamwork and competition. By providing a range of sports, we hope to initiate a life-long enjoyment of physical activity and the health benefits that go with it.

Assessment

Assessment in PE takes place during lessons through feedback provided by staff.  As per our feedback and marking policy, this is most effective during the lesson.  Children will also RAG rate their own learning at the end of each lesson against the Question for the Session.  Formal assessments are made at the end of each term, and these are submitted to the Head Teacher, determining attainment, progress, and the overall impact of the syllabus on all our children.  They are measured against age-related expectations across the syllabus, using a 4-point system, as follows:

  1. Working below Key Stage
  2. Working Towards Age-Related Expectations
  3. Working at Age-Related Expectations
  4. Working at the Greater Depth Standard

Differentiation helps all teachers to ensure that the children’s needs are being met through lesson content that is matched to their needs.  Adaptations are also made to ensure that our SEND children can gain access to all lessons, with a strong focus on disciplinary and substantive knowledge, as opposed to the literacy and numeracy skills we may expect of them to access it.  In this way, low outcomes in literacy and numeracy do not have to equate to low outcomes in PE.

Golden Threads and Curriculum Enrichment

PE supports the 3-Golden Threads in many different ways, and we recognise the contribution it makes to the development of children’s character and worldview.  The global goals provide a framework for the love, care and compassion we show to the planet and each other.  Social Justice is about fairness in society and at Mayflower, we do our upmost to ensure all the children have the same rights, opportunities and access to resources. Outdoor learning is promoted through; The Daily Mile, Sports Day, competitive sporting events with other schools and opportunities to work with professional dance teachers and coaches.   All the above as well as after school clubs all aid to enrich the delivery of the PE at Mayflower Primary School.

The Journey of the Child

Through carefully planned and progressive lessons that reference prior learning and prepare children for future learning, we can chart a child’s journey through our school from their entry in the Orchard, all the way through to the end of Year 6.  Please tap on the following link to see how our children experience PE at Mayflower, and how this links together, helping them to master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.

Curriculum in Action

Talking about the curriculum is far less effective than actually seeing it in action.  We love to capture our children’s engagement with PE, both in school and our local community.  For more information, please tap on the following link:
