At Mayflower children have lots of different ways to make their voices heard. All of the adults in school understand the value of children having a safe space and children can always speak to Mayflower staff if they have concerns. Every classroom has a worry box that the children use to share any concerns with their teachers. Children are given the chance to be Young Consultants and Creativity Councillors. Both of these pupil voice groups work closely with our Deputy Head teacher to make significant changes at Mayflower. The members act as spokespeople for their classmates and bring ideas to the groups as well as sharing concerns.
Young Consultants Our Young Consultants are our members of parliament for each class. The children put themselves forwards and explain why they are the right people to represent their classes on the young consultant board. Children are encouraged to vote for young consultants who they feel will advocate well for them. Our Young Consultant board is also our Eco Schools Committee and they take the lead on ensuring that we are mindful of the SDGS in any decisions that we make. We have a bi-annual trip to Parliament where the children strengthen their understanding of democracy and explore their role in creating change at Mayflower. This year, for the first time, we have a chair and vice chair of the board.
Creativity Council Our Creativity Council are our voice of change. They have previously run Spark Arts Takeover days at Leicester Museum and De Montfort University's Leicester Gallery. Our children have facilitated arts experiences for the public as well as inspiring protest, puppetry and other art forms. This year our creativity council has taken on a year-long project to develop communication at Mayflower. We are looking forward to working with an artist who will allow us to develop this further. Our successes to date involve introducing an annual poetry slam competition and revolutionising break and lunch times.
