    1. Science

Subject Leader
Rizwana Khan

I teach Year 6. I have been at Mayflower Primary School for four years, having taught at a number of other schools in the city. I have a passion for teaching and I love the rewards and challenges of helping children achieve their goals. I have recently become the Science Lead and look forward to taking Science to new levels in our school.

Science plays a crucial role in helping children develop essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to ask questions and investigate the world scientifically. Outside the classroom, I enjoy painting, baking, reading and all things creative.

Intent, Implementation and Impact

As Science Leader, I will work hard to ensure that the curriculum is effectively delivered to all of the children at Mayflower Primary School.  Teachers will be well-trained, equipped with quality resources to deliver engaging lessons, and have the confidence to deliver lessons that motivate and inspire children to be scientists of the future, largely based on the objectives within Sc1.  As our children progress through the school, they will deepen their knowledge of investigative science, and also the work of inspirational scientists through the ages.

Assessment

Assessment in Science takes place during lessons through feedback provided by staff.  As per our feedback and marking policy, this is most effective during the lesson.  Formal assessments are made at the end of each term based on Sc1, and these are submitted to the Head Teacher, determining attainment, progress and the overall impact of the curriculum on all our children. These are as follows:

  1. Working below Key Stage
  2. Working Towards Age-Related Expectations
  3. Working at Age-Related Expectations
  4. Working at the Greater Depth Standard

Differentiation helps all teachers to ensure that the children’s needs are being met through lesson content that is matched to their needs.  Adaptations are also made to ensure that our SEND children can gain access to all lessons, with a strong focus on disciplinary and substantive knowledge, as opposed to the literacy and numeracy skills we may expect of them to access it.  In this way, low outcomes in literacy and numeracy do not have to equate to low outcomes in science.

Golden Threads and Curriculum Enrichment

Science supports the 3-Golden Threads in many different ways, and I recognise the contribution it makes to the development of children’s character, confidence, and ambition.  The global goals provide a framework for sustainability, and many of the environmental messages that children will encounter are rooted in scientific study.  Giving children the language of science and a deeper understanding of associated processes will help them to be aware of the positive choices they can make as future custodians of the planet.  Many Science lessons will be taught outdoors, and the environment in which the school is situated lends itself well to the natural world.  We will embrace these opportunities whenever they are encountered.  Finally, a good grasp of Science will help our children to be positive and optimistic about the future, challenging decision makers to adopt green and environmentally aware policies and procedures that will create a better future for us all.  Visits from and visitors into school also enrich the delivery of the Science curriculum at Mayflower Primary School, examples of which are as follows:

The Journey of the Child

Through carefully planned and progressive units that reference prior learning and prepare children for future learning, we can chart a child’s journey through our school from their entry in the Orchard, all the way through to the end of Year 6.  Please tap on the following link to see how our children experience science at Mayflower, and how this links together, helping them to develop as the scientists of the future:

Curriculum in Action

Talking about the curriculum is far less effective than actually seeing it in action.  We love to capture our children’s engagement with the Science curriculum, both in the classroom and our local community.  For more information, please tap on the following link:
