Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Year 1 is the first year in Key Stage 1. At Mayflower, we have 2-Year 1 classes with the capacity for 30-pupils each. Year 1 marks the beginning of the National Curriculum, but our approach ensures that children still have access to play-based learning for as long as they need it. In this way, the transition from EYFS to the National Curriculum can be successfully managed for all our children.

1KM: Miss Maguire

1KM is one of our Year 1 classes, with a capacity for 30-pupils. Our children begin to make the transition from Early Years Foundation Stage to the subjects of the National Curriculum, but this is done at a pace that meets their needs. There are plenty of opportunities for child-initiated learning, and also teacher led, as the children show us they are ready to learn in this way. We love to see the children learning outdoors, and this helps to ensure that their health, social, and emotional needs can be robustly met. As with our classes in Reception and Nursery, we want to see joy and fun in learning, and ensure that lessons are memorable, purposeful, and carefully sequenced.

1RS: Mrs. Smart

1RS is one of our Year 1 classes, with a capacity for 30-pupils. Long-Term Plan

Children in Year 1 follow an exciting progression of lessons, that reflect all of the subjects of the National Curriculum. Home-learning will support this journey, and we will also celebrate what your child has achieved through weekly newsletters, the school website, and also our Social Media Channels.

Curriculum Enrichment

The creative curriculum we teach is enriched in many different ways, including visitors into school, visits out of school, specialist teaching staff, online resources, clubs, local learning partnerships, and engagement with other schools locally. We know that curriculum enrichment enhances the Quality of Education for all our children, and also creates very real memories of their time at school.

Curriculum Journey

At Mayflower, we try to view learning through the eyes of the child. We recognise that what children are learning now is based on what they learnt before, and this will prepare them for what they need to learn next. Through logical progression and sequencing, all of our lessons have meaning, children can access what they need to learn effectively, and are inspired about what is next.

Assessment

Teachers at Mayflower continually assess the children’s learning, identifying those areas where they are secure in their understanding, where they excel, and also those where more support and guidance will be required. In Year 1, the children also engage with the Phonics Screening Check, which will give them a secure grasp of the building blocks for effective independent reading.

This is because we strongly believe that children learn better when they enjoy what they are doing.
